Week Four

Marie Mingoia & Alex Lewin

<blank>Marie Mangoia:  What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Alex Lewin:  I think that suicide would have to be the lowest depth of misery.  If you feel so terrible that you've gotten to a point where you don't see any reason to continue living, then I think that's about as low as it can get.  Although, after that I would have to say that the next lowest depth of misery is when you are so miserable that you have to make other people feel miserable along with you.

MM:  To what faults do you feel most indulgent?

AL:  I'd have to say my love for food and eating, tied in with my love of lying around and watching television.  Bad combo!!!

MM:  What is your favorite bird?

AL:  I don't know much about birds but those crazy rainforest birds on Planet Earth are pretty awesome.

MM:  What is your present state of mind?

AL:  I'm not sure really.  I guess it's a place of figuring things out.  A contemplative state.

MM:  What do you most value in your friends?

AL:  Honesty, responsibility, and presence.  I don't need my friends to do things for me, or buy me things, or have exciting careers, I just want them to be there for me when I need a shoulder to cry on or a buddy to have fun with and to appreciate me doing the same for them.

Alex Lewin: What is your idea of earthly happiness?

Marie Mingoia: Human connection. A steady flow of inspiration. Love.

AL: What natural gift would you most like to possess?

MM: Optimism & grace.

AL: To what faults do you feel most indulgent?

MM: An overwhelming feeling of not being good enough....and procrastination. I don't know that one would exist without the other.

AL: Where would you like to live?

MM: Currently: I'd like to live in a universe where San Francisco is the next stop off the freeway from Los Angeles. Where I could escape this eternal summer and still be near everyone I love.

AL: When do you feel the least like making art work, and what motivates you in those times to keep working?

MM: Um….now. I'll let you know when I figure it out. In the meantime, I'm trying to push myself out of my comfort zone, making both meaningful and meaningless connections with strangers, watching artist interviews on youtube, having long one-sided conversations with ida (my dog), and waiting for a creative breakthrough.
