Week Two

Ava Alamshah & Suzanne Goldish

Ava Alamshah:  What is your idea of happiness?
Suzanne Goldish:  My idea of happiness is being surrounded by good friends who are all healthy and happy and doing what they love.  It is having unlimited time and resources to do the things you really and truly want to do, unlimited time to talk and laugh and learn and look at the world.  And it is to sleep soundly in the arms of a true love.

AA:  Who are your favorite painters, no....photographers?
SG:  I adore David Hilliard's work.  His photographs are so cinematic - not just because as diptychs and triptychs they mimic frames of a movie lying side by side, but also because somehow the expanse of location they manage to cover allows for so much more detail and information to create inevitable stories.  I also love Ed Ruscha's photographic work, as well as his paintings and graphic work, because of its humor and cynicism.  I think art should make a person feel something, and if a piece can make a person laugh out loud then the artist has measurable proof that he has succeeded.

AA:  What characters in history do you most dislike?
SG:  Wow.  This one's hard considering my knowledge of world history is pathetic.  I guess I'd have to say those that perpetuated the incredible racism in the middle part of the 20th century (and those who continue to do so today.)  The denigration of an entire group of people based solely on a visual difference created such a long lasting and permeating effect on our country that sometimes I feel it is irreparable.  Is that too depressing?  Sorry.

AA:  (If you could live anywhere) where would you like to live?
SG:  Well, this is also a difficult one.  Because I would answer it two different ways depending on whether teleportation devices were available.  But seriously, I want to live wherever I have wonderful friends and family to be around.  For a long time that was New York City for me, and even though the stress and the noise and the priciness of the city bothered me from time to time, it was still exactly where I wanted to be because of my friends there.  Today, I am here in LA and it is exactly where I want to be right now.  It's sunny, I have work, a place to live, and I have an amazing group of friends that I can visit easily and have a variety of adventures with.

AA:  If you were a superhero what powers would you possess & why?
SG:  Is there a superhero that can teleport?
Um... I guess I wouldn't mind flying.  I hate flying in airplanes, it scares the crap out of me, but to be able to fly on your own - I feel like that would be pretty safe considering it's innate.  And it just seems like it would feel really nice - to have the wind in your face, and no traffic, and to have such great views.  And maybe also I'd like to be able to pause time.  That would almost be like having unlimited time, which, as mentioned in my first answer, seems pretty awesome to me.  To never have more than one thing to do at any moment - because you could stop time to get stuff done - that would be great.

Oh, and maybe I'd like to shoot laser beams out of my eyes.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Suzy Goldish: If not yourself, who would you be?
Ava Alamshah: Let's see, there are so many possibilities! I usually struggle with a lot of self doubt, so it would be nice to be someone who exudes pure confidence and strive for success no matter what. Someone who is not afraid to fail. Not sure if there is such a person. I'd like to be someone who makes a living creating. I have a passion for making things; photos, zines, drawings, and it would be lovely to live comfortably doing just these things. I've been taking bass guitar lessons. My fantasy is to start a punk rock band and play shows. If I could make this a reality before I'm 30 that would be beyond my wildest dreams.

SG: Your favorite heroines in real life.
AA: I love women who are a little crazy & who speak their minds. There is a quote from Marilyn Monroe that goes, "well-behaved women rarely make history". I admire women who have a sense of control, even if everything else around them is chaos. And they have to have a strong sense of style. I find that really appealing and I always feel like fashion, music and art practice go hand in hand. For me it's like collecting. I've always collected things since I was a little girl. When I lost interest for dolls, I gained interest in vinyl, picture books, and cameras. To answer your question: Audrey Hepburn and my mother.

SG: What is your present state of mind.
AA: Stuck. I'm always worrying about the future. Where I want to live, what schools to go back to, future projects to think about and complete, finding true love. I feel like the guy in "500 Days of Summer". At the moment I'm feeling satisfied because I've been working on a zine for the Silverlake Jubilee. It's about a break up, so its very cathartic and has released some unwanted tension.

SG: The natural talent I'd like to be gifted with.
AA: It would be so cool to be able to walk into a party and start a conversation with a stranger without feeling awkward. Also to be able to pick up any instrument and magically start playing any song requested.

SG: When do you feel the most like your "true" self?
AA: I feel like I am my true self when I'm surrounded by friends and places I find fascinating. I love to travel and feel most at home when I'm not home. Going on adventures with the people I love is the most inspiring thing. This is when I feel most alive and free. It's that comfort in escaping what you know and see everyday. I like to photograph most when I'm out of my current environment. I think collecting as a child really turned me on to how I create as an adult. I'll see things and places that excite me and want to take them home. Collected memories. I love that feeling.
