Week One

Stefani Greenwood & Jeff McLane

Jeff McLane: What is your present state of mind?
Stefani Greenwood: hopeful, anxious, indecisive

JM: If not yourself, who would you be?
SG: I would be out in the field collecting bugs and natures ephemera for display in museums by day. i would also possess the ability to express myself clearly and succinctly. in the evenings i would turn into a cat.

JM: Your idea of misery?
SG: Being surrounded by an enormous crowd of people chewing food with their mouths open and the amplified sounds of mastication being piped directly into my ears.

JM: Your favorite names?
SG: eli, elsa, lee, bunny and poppy

JM: What is an essential object/thought in your art making? Does this object/thought conflict with an idea of producing something out of raw creativity?  How does this idea effect working in photography specifically, rather than other mediums?
SG: I make art in an attempt to make myself happy which is a complicated thing but there are essentials like aesthetics and gathering information.  When i make art i feel like i am floating, full of extreme energy and temporarily free from outside influences. Negative, analytical, or critical thoughts like "will this or that person like this", "do these colors make sense", "who am i referencing", "what does this mean" only come later (which for me is why it is only an attempt at happiness). I don't think this has a specific effect on working in a given medium. This question is driving me crazy because it calls for a clarity of expression that i only hope for (see question 2).

Stefani Greenwood: Your idea of happiness?
Jeff McLane: I do best when in the midst of production.  I enjoy the feeling of working with an end in sight.  To be without a project brings boredom, which doesn't bring me happiness.

And cats.

SG: Your present state of mind?
JM: As of late, I am conflicted with a balance of creativity and stability.  I am planning to look back on these years as the most frustrating of my life, which brings me some peace of mind.

SG: If not yourself, who would you be?
JM: I know this guy who owns a production company in Oahu.  He surfs every morning, scouts photo locations during the day and never wears shoes.  I would be alright switching spots with him.

SG: Your favorite occupation?
JM: Everytime I visit the animal shelter, I think about working there.

SG: Taken from ira glass interviews ira glass and adapted - original question...So, when you are [on the radio], do you feel like it's one little intense seduction after another? your question... So, when you are [making photographs], do you feel like it's one little intense seduction after another?
JM: To me, seduction brings association with advertisement, visual objects with an agenda.  I try to avoid this in my own work, or at the least, try to rearrange the manner in which this is perceived.
The works of art I enjoy most are the ones which are aware of their own seductions, and try to disrupt them.
